Responsible for the fabrication and sealing of graded seal quartz linear type lamps, glass blowing and fabrication of lamp modules as well as glass beading.
Position Responsibilities: (In order of importance high to low)
. Fabricates and seals graded seal lamps utilizing knowledge of glasses to overcome the mis-match in coefficients of thermal expansion. This is done by using a series of sealing glasses to make a robust glass seal.
. Bends and forms quartz, Pyrex and other glasses into desired shapes with either compressed air or own breath.
. Cuts, anneals, fuses, forms, shapes and seals industrial glassware to detailed drawings.
. Works from daily/weekly build plans to schedule and monitor output.
. Cuts, trims and fire polishes glass as required.
. Collaborates with technical staff on a regualar basis.
. Essential Functions of the job: (Absolutely need to be able to perform these activities)
. Operate a glass lathe and hand torch to make glass-to-glass and glass-to-metal seals.
. Must have good finger/hand dexterity.
. Must have the ability to clearly read and interpret all work instructions.
. Works and relates well to others.
A) Experience: Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and 5+ years experience in glass tube fabrication or equivalent training and experience. Specialized glass training preferred.
B) Technical Competencies: Glasswork (previous experience with Quartz, Borosilicate, and Pyrex).
C) Physical Requirements: Be able to consistently manipulate glass with a handheld torch to tight tolerances. Must be able to stand and or sit at lathe for long periods of time. Must also have the ability to occationally lift up to 10 lbs. Must also be able to walk between stations to and from the lathes to exhaust area as well as Chem Lab and Furnace Room to transport parts and assemblies.
