The Excelitas High Voltage Power (HVP) engineering team is seeking a Sr. R&D Laboratory Technician to assist the HVP engineering team with technical product development and prototype production. The Excelitas HVP division designs and builds power conversion products which meet custom specifications in the medical, semiconductor, industrial, security inspection and research equipment markets. Our power supplies range from 500 W at 800 V output to 75 kW at 750 kV output. We work with various technologies related to the design and construction of high voltage power converters such as custom magnetics, power electronics, analog and digital control electronics, EMI mitigation techniques, through-hole and surface mount PWB assemblies, thermal measurements and control, X-ray measurement and shielding, and dielectric systems including air, oil, RTV, and epoxies. This position will report directly to the HVP Engineering Manager.
Build prototype electronic and mechanical assemblies from sketches or drawings
Fabricate parts for prototype product and for build / test tools and fixtures
Redline engineering documentation to correct initial design errors and prescribe creative design changes to improve the manufacturability of new products
Disassembly, diagnosis, repair, and re-assembly of prototype products
Test prototype power supplies for compliance to operational specifications
Debug prototype power supplies under direction of the responsible engineer
Assist engineering department in other routine product development activities:
-Completion and documentation of Design Verification Tests
-Root cause analysis and resolution of product failures
-Specification, documentation and purchasing of new components
-Engineering Change Order documentation to modify drawings and Bills Of Materials
-Product transition from prototype to production; trains production assembly and test personnel, receives feedback from production personnel, and helps with product assembly or test method improvements
-Other tasks as needed during product development including travel to outside test laboratories, suppliers or customers
Maintain cleanliness and organization of equipment and components in engineering laboratory
Ensures compliance to ISO9000 procedures
Adherence to corporate policies and procedures
Associates Degree in electrical, mechanical, or industrial engineering technology with at least 5 years practical experience, or 10+ years experience in a related R&D laboratory environment
Experience working in or supporting power electronics manufacturing, semiconductor equipment manufacturing or field service.
Experience with proper use and specification of fastening hardware, electrical connectors, adhesives, thermal transfer materials, and various industrial chemicals including solvents, solder, fluxes, RTV, and epoxies.
Experience specifying, commissioning, and/or maintaining manufacturing equipment such as coil winders, wave solder equipment, industrial washers, vacuum systems, transformer oil treatment and conditioning systems, pneumatic equipment, or related systems.
Ability to learn and become proficient with new test equipment, software, manufacturing and fabrication techniques.
Proficiency with routine machine shop tools such as metal lathe and milling machine
Ability to fabricate simple metal, plastic, and sheet metal parts
Excellent soldering and wire harness assembly skills. Familiarity with IPC 610A preferred.
Surface mount and through-hole electronics rework experience.
Proficiency with EE R&D lab test equipment and an understanding of best-practice measurement techniques.
Practical understanding of analog and digital circuits. Experience with testing and debugging switched high voltage power converters (100 V to 200 kV) preferred.
Knowledge of high voltage laboratory safety practices
Excellent communication and computer skills
-MS Word, Excel, Outlook required; AutoCad or similar, MentorGraphics or similar experience preferred.
Labview programming skills are a plus
